“RAISE THE ROOF” BY THREE MORE FLOORS!
Rising out of the ashes of a fire in 1998, Shema Kolainu, a school and center for children with autism, currently serves over 350 children in school- and home-based programs in the five boroughs of New York City. Within the walls of this remarkable two-story institution, 42 children participate in education and training experiences, while more than 188 children are taught in our home-based settings. At Shema Kolainu, children’s voices ring throughout the hallways. Sounds of laughter, cries of despair, the lilt of singing and music, and shouts of joy and triumph, all merge to make the school a lively place for children to achieve, grow and become the best they can be.
With the rapid rise in autism, the demand for education placements is increasing. Shema Kolainu has kicked off a $12 million dollar campaign to “Raise the Roof” and add three more floors to the existing structure.
Once again, the School and Center is turning to friends and supporters for help. New York City Council has committed $3 million for 2006 in support of the capital campaign. The expansion project has received the endorsement of Mayor Bloomberg and support from the New York City Economic and Development Council and others, but more is needed to reach the $12 million goal.
